Welcome to Puglia, Italy's hidden gem, boasting stunning coastlines that rival any in the country. Located in the "heel" of Italy's boot, Puglia boasts everything a traveler could dream of – from delicious cuisine to inspiring cities – but perhaps its most captivating feature is its dreamy coastlines. With sandy beaches adorned with stylish beach clubs on the west coast and adventurous rocky shores on the east, Puglia has it all. Despite having the longest coastline in Italy, Puglia remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, making it a perfect escape for those seeking unspoiled beauty. In this article, you'll uncover the best-kept secrets of Puglia's coastline, and discover the 20 best beaches in Puglia.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Transportation: While Puglia's beaches are stunning, many of them are remote and not easily accessible by public transportation. Having a car gives you the flexibility to explore these hidden gems at your own pace.
Every beach has a free beach: No need to worry about entry fees at Puglia's beaches! Each coastline offers areas of free access where you can lay your towel and soak up the sun without any charge. This is a great compromise for anyone who wants access to restrooms and bars offered by the lidos, without paying for a sunbed or umbrella.
Avoid beaches on the weekend if you can: The beaches in Puglia can get quite crowded, especially on weekends when locals and tourists alike flock to the coast. I highly recommend visiting during the weekdays to make the most of your experience and avoid crowds and weekend prices.
Hottest months July and August: Puglia experiences scorching temperatures during the peak summer months of July and August. Be prepared for intense heat and consider visiting earlier or later in the season (June or September) for more comfortable beach days and fewer crowds.
Parking usually 3 - 6 euros for the day: While most beaches in Puglia offer parking facilities, be prepared to pay a small fee ranging from 3 to 6 euros for the day. This fee helps maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the parking areas near the beaches.
BEST BEACHES IN MONOPOLI:
When it comes to beaches in the Bari area, Monopoli takes the crown for sheer beauty. Spanning a generous 13 kilometers, its coastline is a delightful mix of sun-kissed sandy stretches and rugged, untamed rock formations. Tucked away amidst the cliffs are hidden gems waiting to be discovered – think secret coves and secluded bays just waiting for your footprints. The waters here boast an irresistible turquoise hue that remains crystal clear all year round. While some beaches have garnered quite the following, complete with all the trimmings, others are like well-kept secrets, known only to the savvy locals. But fret not, I've done the legwork to unearth the very best free beaches Monopoli has to offer.
So sit back, relax, and let's dive into the 6 best beaches in Monopoli you won't want to miss.
PORTO GHIACCIOLO
Photos by gaiaonthego
Nestled in the heart of Puglia, Porto Ghiacciolo stands out as my absolute favorite beach spot. Picture-perfect with its crystal-clear waters, golden sands, and a rugged charm accentuated by the backdrop of an abandoned castle. Whether you're in the mood for lounging on rented beds at the Lido, unwinding at the small free beach, or enjoying a laid-back meal at the waterfront restaurant/bar, this beach has something for everyone. This beach can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, so make sure to get here early if you want to find a spot on the free beach.
While the best way to reach it is by car, there's also a convenient bus connection available from the Monopoli Centrale train station on lines 1 and 2.
PORTO VEDRE & CALA PARADISO

Tucked together amidst the rocky shoreline, these two charming coves exude an irresistible allure with their golden sands and crystal waters. Given that they're rather small, it's best to arrive early to claim your piece of paradise. At the nearby Cala Paradiso, you'll find a beach club (referred to as a "lido") offering day bed rentals and convenient facilities for a truly indulgent beach day.
While having a car is ideal, these beaches can be found on bus lines 1 and 2 from Monopoli Centrale train station.
PORTO MARZANO & CALA DIAVOLO
Photos by gaiaonthego
Sharing a similar vibe to Porto Verde, this beach is nestled along the coastline and offers a sandy shoreline. Adjacent to it are two lively lidos, Cala Diavolo and Porto Marzano Beach, where you can cool off with a drink or enjoy some gelato. Upon reaching the beach, I suggest taking the trail on the right side (the one without the staircase), leading you to the iconic blue doors of Cala Diavolo Beach Club.
For an unforgettable evening, Cala Diavolo often throws "sunset parties" with live DJs, as well as dinner-with-a-show events. If you're planning to stay late for one of these events after a long day at the beach, I'd recommend using their changing rooms and showers to freshen up. Additionally, make sure to check out their Instagram page and book your spot in advance.
Further down the road, you'll find another hotspot, lido Macrame, which also puts on lively DJ sunset events for a memorable beach experience.
TORRE CINTOLA

Yet another one of my favorites, this beach boasts a rugged and picturesque landscape, adorned with ruins dating back to the 16th century. It's a well-kept secret among locals, making it the ultimate hideaway from large crowds. While there's not a grain of sand in sight, you can still lounge in comfort by renting daybeds at the Baia Luna Beach Club for just a few euros.
Getting here is pretty easy – by car, or catch bus lines 1 or 2, getting off at "Capitolo Centro" and walking about 7 minutes. If you plan to be here all day, I recommend treating yourself to one of the seafood restaurants in Capitolo Centro. For a delightful seaside view, I suggest booking ahead at Ristorante Gran Pavese.
SPIAGGIA DELLE DUNE
While much of Monopoli's coastline tends to be rocky and compact, Spiaggia delle Dune stands out as a lengthy public beach adorned with pristine white sands! Adjacent to the beach is a convenient lido offering snacks, restroom facilities, and ample parking right in front.
LIDO ONDA BLU
A bit further along the coastline, you'll find this beach nestled on the outskirts of Ostuni, offering another fantastic choice for those seeking a lengthy stretch of white sand. Complete with convenient parking and access to a bar, it's a perfect spot to unwind and soak up the sun.

Charming coastal towns span the area, nestled amidst the picturesque surroundings. Just a heads up, there are no bathrooms, bars, or other amenities on the beach. On this particular day, we were lucky enough to find a Granita stand, but if you're looking for something more solid I suggest walking into the nearby town of Sant'Andrea.

Nestled along the coast of Santa Cesarea Terme sits an enchanting bay. Situated amongst a unique rock formation, the stunning white cliffs form a U-shape. Much like many of Salento's hidden gems, reaching this beach requires a bit of effort and some climbing, as there is a steep flight of stairs to get down. As long as you use caution to get down, the crystal-clear waters and mesmerizing panorama views make every step worthwhile. The beach has a just small bit of sand, but as with many Puglia beaches, there are plenty of rocks to lay on and jump in the water from.

A popular local rock beach, with cold water coming from the nearby natural spring. There's a small bar with showers and services, and the parking above the beach is completely free.
TRICASE PORTO

Tricase Porto is a small port town bordering the Adriatic Sea. It's a beloved spot among locals, making it a haven away from the tourist crowds. If you venture to the end of the beach, you'll stumble upon a small passage in the rocks to your left. Here lies a "secret" rocky beach, with a charming kiosk of local snacks. Tricase Porto is close to Marina Serra, so I recommend spending half a day at each location.
BEST BEACHES IN SALENTO - IONIAN COAST
The Ionian Sea offers a tranquil contrast to the lively waves and wind of the Adriatic coast, as the water is sheltered by Calabria directly across the coast. Positioned along the west coast, Here you'll find breathtaking sunsets over the water. The coastline is flat with lots of long white sandy dunes, and is known as the "Maldives of Salento". This area attracts numerous tourists because of its many amenities, including top-notch beach facilities, hotels, holiday villages, and campsites. Gallipoli and its surroundings are known for their vibrant beach clubs, contributing to bustling summer nightlife with DJs and concerts.
Luckily for you, I've explored them all and have selected the 4 best beaches in Salento (Ionian Coast) that are worth visiting:
